All seventeen-year-old Kathrin Walsh wanted when she transferred to a school for the Gifted was to feel accepted and normal, and she does…mostly. But when dreams of another boy make her question her relationship, kids go missing, and she learns something troubling about what she is and why her future will forever be altered, she quickly realizes that ‘normal’ is only an illusion, and that love can walk a fine line between captivating and maddening, or even worse – it can make you abandon all trace of reason. Love can be deadly.

From the bestselling author of the Alyx Rayer Chronicles, comes a refreshingly different Young Adult series with plenty of love, suspense, and a new take on the Paranormal.

Interview

  1. Could you tell us a bit about your most recent release and why it is a must-read?

First… thanks a TON for hosting me today, Laura! My most recent release is Lilliana, novella to the Captivated Series, and the reason it’s a must-read is because it gives the reader an in-depth look into one of the villains – a conjurer of the dark. The novel explores the depths that hatred and bitterness can take you to, and it shows you that if you’re not careful, it can fully consume you.

  1. What is your favorite part of this book?

I have to admit, there were parts that were tough to write. I had to really dig deep and live in the darkness she was experiencing. But at the end of it all, I can honestly say that the part where she’s fully consumed in darkness was my favorite one to write. The juxtaposition of the snow and the darkness, and the visual of her being consumed by it would make for one heck of a cinematic experience! I hope it comes across well in the novel.

  1. In addition to being a writer, do you have a day job? If so, what is it?

I do! I work in Marketing for a big utility company in Georgia, and I love it as much as I love writing, so I don’t really like to call either of them jobs. They’re what I make a living at! 😉

I feel you there. I love my day job too.

  1. What does your typical day look like?

Like a well-orchestrated, sometimes chaotic circus. I have to keep everything balanced and juggled just right or it will all come tumbling down! My day starts with taking the kids to school, then I come home, answer emails and messages, see what’s on my agenda for the day (for both my Marketing and writing ‘jobs’), then I try to plan it out in such a way that I can get it all done. Then the kids get home, which means dinner, chores, homework, etc, and the day usually ends with editing or writing, reading a book for review, working out, showering, and collapsing on the bed until it starts all over again. Day planners are my very best friends!

  1. What do you love most about the writing process?

Actually sitting down and writing! I’m constantly working out the storyline in my head and thinking of scenes that will have an impact on the reader, so when I’m able to sit down and let the floodgates open, it’s both cleansing and fulfilling. There’s nothing like it in the world!

You just put into words how I’ve felt about writing. Thank you for that.

  1. Of all the characters you have created, which is your favorite and why?

No! Don’t make me choose! But if you’re twisting my arm, I’ll have to go with Alyx from my very first series. She’s what started it all! Literally! There wouldn’t even be a Captivated Series unless she procreated.

Then we’re all thankful for her.

  1. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

A little of both! There are pieces of me (and others in my life) scattered throughout all of my characters. Even the villains.

  1. What is the biggest surprise you experienced after becoming a writer?

How much work was involved with getting the manuscript ready for publishing. There are so many things you need to do as a writer to make sure your work is fit for public consumption! You’ll need to get beta readers, an editor, have proper formatting, etc. You HAVE to make sure it’s ‘ready’ to be read by others. And the reason I say ‘ready,’ is because you never really feel like it’s ready to send out into the world. It just needs to be pretty dang close.

  1. Since being a writer, what has been the best compliment?

That the series is one of their favorites! I’ve gotten that compliment for both the Captivated and the Alyx Rayer series. That’s a pretty huge compliment for any author, and it always makes my day! There are a lot of great series out there.

Congratulations on that because you certainly deserve it.

  1. If you could ask one question from any one person, living or dead, what would it be and from whom?

Great question! I would ask my grandmother if there was anything she regretted not doing while she was alive. Sometimes I think we get so consumed with our day to day lives that we forget to actually live (guilty!), and the things on our bucket list take a backseat. I would love to know if there was a place she didn’t get to visit or something she didn’t get to do, and then go do it in her stead.

Great answer. I wish I could ask mine too.

  1. What is the toughest criticism given to you as an author?

That my story should be thrown in the trash. Ouch! Which meant they pretty much hated everything about it. Can’t please everyone, right?

So right, but you don’t have to, you have so many of us that love your writing.

  1. If you were riding in an elevator with a new writer, what wisdom would you bestow upon him/her before you reached the top floor?

Persevere! Write as much as you read, and hang in there! Success doesn’t happen overnight.

  1. What is the most amusing thing that has ever happened to you?

I don’t know that there’s a ‘most amusing thing’ since I’m one of the clumsiest people you’ll ever meet. Every day is entertaining! 🙂

  1. What websites or resources have been helpful to you, as a writer?

I preach about these guys all the time, but Instafreebie without a doubt! If you’re in need of place to distribute review copies, dole out giveaway copies or samples of your books, AND build your mailing list at the same time, then you really need to check them out!

Ooh, good to know. Thank you!

  1. Do you have any hidden or uncommon talents?

I can trip over air! Is that considered a talent? I’m also a pretty decent singer/ performer in the car. 😉

You make me laugh.

  1. What would the main character in your most recent book have to say about you?

Well Lilliana definitely wouldn’t like me very much… I killed her family off! Sorry not sorry.

As a writer, you sometimes have to kill your darlings.

  1. What is something memorable you heard from a reader/fan?

That my Captivated Series was Oh.Em.Gee. good, and that they hoped my books would one day be made into a movie. I love it when my readers are as enthused about my stories as I am!

  1. If money were no object, where would you live and why?

An island somewhere in the Caribbean. I can’t stand the cold!

Oh honey, please. I’d be your neighbor!

  1. Currently, how many ideas for different books do you have going/jotted down?

Around 10! I’ll never write fast enough to keep up…

  1. Where can we find you online?

Facebook, Goodreads, and my Website!

Thank you so much for your time today. It’s always such a pleasure for me to hang with you. I know my readers will too!
